4 Things Should Learn About Plumbing

It’s World Toilet Day! What might sound like just another silly social media holiday is in fact an incredibly important, globally recognized day for raising awareness of the sanitation crisis crippling so many places worldwide. This year’s theme is Toilets and Jobs: A lack of toilets at work and at home has severe impacts upon businesses through problems in the workforce: poor health, absenteeism, attrition, reduced concentration, exhaustion, and decreased productivity. Loss of productivity due to illnesses caused by lack of sanitation and poor hygiene practices is estimated to cost many countries up to 5% of GDP. Investing in good toilets in workplaces and schools so that women and girls have clean, separate facilities to maintain their dignity, and to manage menstruation or pregnancy safely, can boost what is often referred to as the ‘girl effect’: maximising the involvement of half the population in society. – http://www.worldtoiletday.info The link between plumbing and health is something we’ve explored a few times on this blog (see our posts on World Plumbing Day , World Water Day , and World Health Day ), as well as in the Plumbing & Health article at our sponsor site. We understand that we’re fortunate to live in a society that has the stability and wealth to build and maintain an overwhelmingly safe and effective sanitation infrastructure. In our small way, we hope our efforts to inform and educate will motivate readers and customers alike to reflect upon this somewhat unique position in the world. The sanitation crisis is not intractable, but substantial progress will require all of us to acknowledge its prevalence and its threat.

Q: What made you decide to support the educational component of the air-conditioning industry? How has being involved in that aspect affected you personally? A:I’m a believer in giving back to the industry that has done so much for my family and me, and it has been a rewarding experience. I have made trade education one of my personal missions. Helping people with education can have a big, sustaining impact on their lives, their families and the industry. Some of the areas I have supported are providing scholarships for young men and women to receive an associate degree in HVAC and providing tools for post-9/11 veterans upon graduation, so they can be prepared for their first job in HVAC. Q: What are the other companies you’ve built and sold during your career? Why did you choose to part ways? A: I built Racee Air Conditioning, Lang Refrigeration, Economy Air Conditioning, Gordontheplumber.com Fox Valley IL Gardner Refrigeration, Spud Henry Plumbing, Sunset Sheetmetal &Air Conditioning, ASSAP Services and Yes Air Conditioning and Plumbing. I sold these businesses because they gave me an offer I couldn’t refuse.

We had a Richmond model # 6G40-32PF3, manufacture date 17 May 2017 installed by a plummer on May 28, 2016. On September 1, 2017 we noticed water on the floor, the tank was leaking between the metal outside shell and insulation just above the gas valve. A stream of water going onto the pilot light. I called technical service department and they claim it is out of warranty because the building it was in is used for residential and business. When over 90% of the water is residential, they will not cover the warranty even though there are 12 year warranties on many of their products, since when is a water heater especially a gas or propane water heater not covered even if it is in a residential/business. This is not good practice on Rheem or Richmond products. I will tell you that how can a tank fail in a years time, poor quality, poor service, poor warranty, no one should have to buy bad products like this, not even if it is a business. Time to buy a different product than this company. The paperwork says Residential Gas or Electric Water Heaters with a 6 year tank and 6 year parts limited warranty.

In older water heaters thermocouples have a tendency to burn out which is not unusual, but in some cases, it may have moved out of position keeping it from sensing the heat generated by the pilot light. I’ve actually seen new water heaters having pilot outage issues because the thermocouple moved out of position while in transit. In nine out of ten cases in my experience, the Gas Water Heater Pilot Light went out because the thermocouple lost it ability to generate enough voltage to keep the pilot going. A common Gordontheplumber.com Hinsdale Illinois 60521 repair in the world of gas water heaters. I have not had the opportunity to replace a pilot generator with the shielded wire leads on a gas water heater to date. Although I did have to replace one on my own gas fireplace. In the video below I illustrate an older water heater followed by a more modern version and take through some steps needed should you decide to attempt this repair yourself. WARNING: I do not recommend the D.I.Y. person take on a repair like this but I know that many in fact do and with that in mind hopefully I can help you avoid some pitfalls in the process.

The best place to install the unit is on the second floor. This is assuming that your laundry room is in the basement or first floor. Ensure that the heater or outlet water pipe doesn’t touch the combustible materials. Keep a distance of 24″ between the combustibles, the water heater, and the output hot water pipe. Again, remember to be a law-abiding citizen. Install your tankless water heater according to your State or City’s local codes. If they’re none, at least follow the recent edition of the National Fuel Gas Code. For safety reasons, the water heater should not be on air conditioning lines or under pipes that can drip. Also, don’t put the water heater above an electrical box. This could cause a fire in case of water leakage. Tankless water heater requires higher voltage power supply.

Moving to the bathroom, what should we steer clear of? During the holidays bathroom facilities are taxed with additional traffic and usage. Annual maintenance to clear any build-up can often prevent major toilet clogs and avoid the spread of infectious waste in the bathroom. Also, stay away from using chemicals to try and clear blockage as this rarely remedies a clogged line and can damage your pipes. If a plunger doesn’t clear the clog, turn to the pros. What to be mindful of with water heaters? The arrival of cooler weather raises caution for water heaters. Cold air causes expansion and contraction in water heaters and in older units, fractures can occur resulting in failure – which usually leads to flooding. Routine maintenance can identify those risks as well as ensure water heaters are operating effectively and efficiently.

While it may sound like something out of the 1980 classic Airplane!, this is no joke. The strange but true story happened just over a month ago, as a Norwegian flight from Oslo to Munich carrying a platoon of plumbers to a business function was forced to reroute due to toilet trouble. The inherent funniness of the situation was not lost on Frank Olsen, managing director of Rørkjøp, the plumbing company hosting the event. “We did not take the risk to send a plumber outside at 10,000 meters high [approximately 6 miles or 30,000 feet],” said Olsen. “There was a good atmosphere in the plane with the irony about the broken toilets.” Olsen is correct: the plumbing problem could not have been corrected from inside the plane. And with no plumber expected to pull off a Mission: Impossible-style mid-air repair, it was time to ground the flight. Despite the potty-humor appeal of this story, we know you’re probably not working on airplane plumbing (but if you’ve ever wondered how they achieve that super-suction, or just where the waste goes, check this out ). So without further ado, here are the top three challenges facing us land-based DIY plumbers. It’s the flush of fear: you pull the handle and the water rises… and keeps rising. If you’re lucky, it stops before it spills over the bowl. If you’re not, it’s time to break out the mop. Toilet troubles like this are generally due to a clog within the waste pipe; it may be a build up of that bottom-cushioning two-ply, or maybe your kid wanted to see if a Lego Man could swim.

4 Things Should Learn About Plumbing Today

Two years later, the company opened an office in Las Vegas and, in 2016, in Corona, California. In these locations, Goodrich owns both an HVAC company — Goettl Air Conditioning — and The Sunny Plumber, but he operates them separately. What they have in common is the goal of growing across state lines. As Goodrich puts it in a Las Vegas business publication interview in March 2017: “Our ultimate goal is to bring our brand, our unique customer-centric culture and processes across the nation and become the gold standard for home service in the U.S.” To that end, the plumbing side of the organization is being aggressively marketed around an image of the sun. The company logo is a smiling cartoon sun ablaze with cheerfulness and holding a pipe wrench in one of its sunbeams. The theme continues through bright orange and yellow wrapping on service trucks — and the giveaway of a pair of sunglasses with every job. The positive vibes flowing from the company image are also, by design, felt within the company, according to Eisenhauer. He says The Sunny Plumber is as optimistic a workplace as it appears to be. “Every company goes through its trials, but we do everything we can to keep morale up. We do everything we can to make it a positive work environment.

On an electric device, the first thing you MUST do is TURN OFF water heater power. Do not open any access panels, if the power is still on. 2. Before checking an electric water heater, check the multimeter on an outlet that you are sure is working. 3. On a gas heater, turn the gas pilot control valve to – pilot 3. For both an electric and a gas heater, be sure to TURN OFF the water supply. This is a very important step, as you may get seriously scalded or even get burned, if hot water comes out, when you are working on a repair. One source of leak you may have discovered is at the T&P relief valve (there may be large amounts of water gushing out of it).

Signs that your hot water heater is nearing the end of its service life Here are signs that your water heater may need to be replaced. On average you should expect to spend $700-2,500 on a new tank-style water heater (including installation). 1. Frequent problems that require repairs Tank-style electric and gas water heaters can experience the following problems: -Water leaks (if the tank itself is leaking, its a sure sign that it has corroded as a result of old age and needs to be replaced) -Water is there, Gordontheplumber.com Emergency Plumbing Contractor but its not hot enough/there are frequent temperature fluctuations While each of these problems does not indicate on its own that its time to get a new heater (in fact most can be fixed), if you start experiencing issues frequently, its a very telling sign that the device is old and needs to be replaced. Moreover, if you find that your repair bills start to add up, it may be a smart financial decision to replace the heater, rather than continue dumping money into repairs. If you know the age of your water heater, and its nearing the end of its service life, you may want to consider replacing it, BEFORE it starts giving you major trouble . It often happens that a heater works perfectly well, and just before due to expire, it gives a major leak, which is more like a flood. If this happens, you may encounter costly repairs from water damage, in addition to the cost of replacing the device itself. 3. Rusty color water coming out of faucet/shower If there is rusty color water coming out, when you turn on hot water, it may be a sign that your heater has started to rust from the inside due to old age.

For updated information on the 2017 scholarship opportunity from My Service Depot (now $2000!), please visit https://www.smartservice.com/smart-service-scholarship/ Are you currently attending, or plan to attend, a college, university, or trade school with the intention of pursuing a career in a field service industry? Know someone who is? Well, we have some good news: a $1000 scholarship is being offered by My Service Depot for the 2017 Spring and Fall semesters! The company, known for its Smart Service software, has chosen to offer the twice-yearly scholarship in light of the growing movement to better recognize alternative career paths after high school, as well as the chronic shortage of skilled workers. Says Creative Director Ben Yackshaw, “At My Service Depot, we feel that too much effort is spent directing young men and women to pursue traditional four year colleges and liberal arts degrees when those degrees don’t necessarily translate into good jobs for graduating students.  Meanwhile, many field service occupations that offer intellectually stimulating and well-paying work remain understaffed.” The scholarship is open to anyone who’s enrolled or planning to enroll in a skilled trades program, and  has graduated high school in the last 15 years – or will have graduated at the time of receiving the award – with a 2.5 GPA or better. All that’s needed is either a video (5 minutes or less) or written essay explaining the applicant’s interest in the skilled trades. Video is preferred “both to increase the appeal of the opportunity and to emphasize traits (affability, presentation) we feel will better serve aspiring field service professionals in their chosen field.” For full details and eligibility requirements, visit http://www.smartservice.com/scholarship.html – entries for Spring 2017 must be submitted by Thursday, November 10th, 2016! Horrible customer service,, nothing but issues with heater I have owned my Richmond Encore heater for 2 years. For the past year now we have to constantly reset the heater. It shuts itself off on us at least 5 times per week if not more. Nothing more annoying than getting into a cold shower and having to head to basement to reset the power on it. I had to jump through hoops a year ago to get a service company to come out and service it. Only 1 year in !! The guy serviced it and it worked for a month. Then same problem. I then performed the annual flush test as per Richmond instructions and flush for 2 hours with vinegar. Still no improvement.

Eligible females diminishing; School in crisis. We’ll be taking a look at a couple of different countries and their bathroom etiquette. Some may be similar while others are completely different. The website Teach House, who is certified by Cambridge University has a blog about the different Chinese customs and etiquette. Gold, who wrote the blog, talks about all the different areas of their culture. The most interesting point he makes is when he is talking about their bathroom etiquette. Their public toilets are very different from Western toilet. In China, they are called squatters. As you can see in the picture, it is simply a porcelain hole in the ground. It is like a toilet bowl built into the floor instead of above it. Fun fact: there is rarely toilet paper provided, so most Chinese people always carry tissue paper with them. So, if you ever visit you should too.

Luckily, there are several options.  Lack of proper planning may lead to irregular water temperatures. Poor flow of water, need for regular maintenance , or worse still, damage to the whole system. It’s better to install the tankless water heater in the same location where the old heater was. Only a few changes are necessary. This way you will cut the installation costs. You will use the hot water line, and water and gas supplies that are already in place. Change the venting to accommodate the new tankless water heater if you’re to follow this idea. Otherwise, consider the existing plumbing configuration. Your desired location should not demand significant alteration to the existing plumbing work. This is because relaying the entire system afresh may lead to unnecessary costs.

Plastic laminate may be applied to both sides to create a product that can be used to create everything from furniture to cabinets to wall paneling. Head into IKEA and you'll find acres of particleboard. There are a few things particleboard is NOT. It's not medium density fiberboard (MDF)—a material with greater density and weight composed of more uniform particles. It's NOT oriented strand board (OSB), a material composed of large wood chips and strands that's structurally equivalent to plywood. It does NOT have great nail or screw holding ability, nor is it all that water resistant; water can quickly cause the material to swell and lose structural integrity. But if you need something flat and cheap for use in a dry place, particleboard will do you proud. Learn how to make a plastic laminate tabletop with a particleboard substrate. Style D, also known as "DL," "drip edge" or "eave drip," is a type of roof flashing, applied to the edge of a roof prior to shingling. It's shaped more like a "T" than a "D"—but that's construction terminology for you. One arm of the "T" extends a couple inches onto the roof, the other arm extends about 1 inch beyond the roof and the lower leg extends about 1 inch down onto the fascia.

Rheem is the worst water heater we ever had We bought a Rheem water heater model no. 42VR50-40F about three (3) years ago and every summer when the weather gets hot the pilot keeps going off almost on a daily basis. Even though we have a new roof, very long ridge event, about 30 soffits and two powerful solar system fans adequate for 3200 SF of air circulation. Couple of times, Rheem has sent me parts to replace, but still we have the same issue. Their Customer Service/Technical Supports constantly make excuses regarding the weather being hot and attic temperature. If Rheem's water heaters are not designed to be installed in attic Rheem should have expressed this on their warranty and all other literature. I had an A.O. Smith water heater in the same house less ridge event and two powerful fans and that water heater never went out not even once in 17 years.

Find out if there is anything you can do to reduce the amount of hot water you use. There may be other things you can do. This includes using a drain water heat recovery, which may save you some money on your bill. 3. Fuel Types- When it comes to choosing a new water heater, you want to consider what energy source you’ll use. Keep in mind its cost and availability. Annual operation costs will be affected by the type of fuel or energy you use, but so does the water heater’s energy efficiency and its size. The type of fuel and the availability of that fuel may help you choose a water heater. There are a number of water heat options out there. The next few paragraphs will discuss what some of those options are. One of the most widely available fuel source for tankless heaters and heat pump heaters is electricity.

When comparing to the above smaller models, you will find that RTEX-08 also uses one heating element, RTEX-11 – two heating elements of 5.5 kW and RTEX-13 – two elements of 6.5 kW each. These are the only models that use side water connections. Rheem models from RTEX-08 to RTEX-36 are all equipped with the self-modulating power control and computer logic control to meet the demand for hot water by sending the right power to the heating elements and an external adjustable digital thermostat with the LED temperature display for easy control and monitoring. RTEX-18 tankless water heaters are designed to provide more power of up to 18 kW and water flow of 4.4 GPM. These use larger ¾” water connections, located at the bottom of the unit. The temperature of the hot water can be adjusted in the range from 80 F to 140 F using the built-in dial-knob and seen on the small screen. RTEX-24 and RTEX-27 tankless water heaters look the same as the RTEX-18 models, utilize the same features, but have three heating elements. These models can generate 24 kW and 27 kW and produce 5.9 GPM and 6.6 GPM of hot water. RTEX-36 is the largest tankless and electric water heater from Rheem and when compared to the above whole-house models, it has similar features but four heating elements allowing production of hot water, up to 8.8 GPM. As it can be seen from the above overview, Rheem tankless electric water heaters are designed mainly for residential homes, either small or large, single or multiple fixtures.

A Quick Recap on the Orangeburg Pipe Problem Made of wood pulp that has been sealed with coal tar,  Orangeburg  has been described by some plumbing professionals as nothing more than a “coal tar-impregnated toilet paper tube.” That it has lasted as long as it has is some sort of miracle, many say. While a form of Orangeburg (otherwise known as bituminous fiber pipe) has been around since the late 1800s, widespread usage of Orangeburg began during World War II due to a shortage of more cast iron materials, which were needed for the war effort. Following the war, Orangeburg continued to proliferate because it was cheap. Sewer piping tends to be “out of sight, out of mind” until there’s, at a minimum, some sort of water backup. That’s just what happened to homeowner Erika Dronen. “We started having problems with our sewer line about a week after purchasing our home,” Dronen told  The Patch . “Black water started coming up from the drain in our basement floor. We were told we had Orangeburg piping and the tree roots in our yard were crushing it. At this point, we have spent over $20,000 in sewer line repairs and the replacement of carpet and furniture.” So what can you do to avoid facing a problem like Erika?

2 Things On Home Improvement Plumbing

You wouldn’t think a water main built in the 1980s would need rehabilitation just 20-some years later. But this situation was unique; seismic activity in 2003 caused slow landslide movements, leading to repeated damage to pipes. The result? Frequent service interruptions. The sections needing repair were pinpointed via GeoRadar detection, and work began utilizing trenchless technology . Today, the Nuovo Scillato water main is now back Gordontheplumber.com Willowbrook IL Dupage County in operation, and the entire project was completed in under 2 months. “This is one of the most important rehabilitation projects ever performed with trenchless technology in Italy,” said a project rep. Another city a little closer to home was looking to replace a 107-year old sanitary sewer main. The K Street Emergency Sanitary Sewer Main Rehabilitation Project , right here in the Golden State, involved replacing 600 lineal feet of sanitary sewer main.

The other half of the job is converting it. If done correctly your website should be able to easily convert traffic into paying customers. Here are some key elements to create a better website to increase conversions. It starts with your web address. 8 Best Home Improvements For Plumbing

Last, but not least, while in our customers’ homes, do the things that protect our customers’ health and safety. Change their smoke detector batteries; replace the screws in the AC unit that the last guy left out; and check the duct system and seal up any open areas that may draw dust and dirt into the home. Q: The Goettl AC logo features a young boy holding a flashlight; can you explain why you chose that imagery to represent your air-conditioning business? A: Our brand is about the experience, joy and life lessons a boy learns by holding the flashlight for his dad. Most men have experienced holding the flashlight for their dads and identify that as a positive impact in their lives. I was a 10-year-old boy holding the flashlight for my dad, Duncan Goodrich, as he worked on an air conditioner for a customer. Through many years of being the official flashlight holder, I became a skilled HVAC technician, learned invaluable business lessons and, ultimately, how to be the best at what I do and make customers happy. By the way, the boy on the logo is a digital re-creation of my son, Duncan, when he was 10 years old. I’m pretty sure he resembled me at that age. Q: Besides learning from your father, do you have any formal education in air-conditioning and plumbing? Do you think that having a technical background is essential to running the business side of things, and if so, why?

Below, you’ll find our original post from 2016. We think this is a great opportunity, and encourage everyone to spread the word!
